In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, people are rushing to buy purple sweet potatoes in solidarity with the farmers who have been economically affected by the pandemic. Unfortunately, the export of this type of potato was halted due to COVID-19 and growers have been struggling to make a living.
Bui Thanh Tuan told yahoo.com: “Every day I buy about 500/600 kgs of potatoes, the price is 2,000 Vietnamese Dong per kg [€0.07]. I bought them for the elderly and children. This potato is very tasty and soft”. One of the shops is owned by Anh Quang Thanh and Mong Thanh. Every day they are selling nearly 200 tons of potatoes.
The shop owner, Quang Thanh, said: “The potatoes come from farmers in the two districts of Binh Tan and Binh Minh, in the Vinh Long province. Why do I only sell them for 2,000 Vietnamese Dong? Because I care about my relatives and the poor farmers. I use my own money to make up for the loss”.
