US: National Co+op Grocers partners with Mercato
Mercato, the e-commerce platform created for America’s independent grocers and specialty food stores, announced that it has partnered with the National Co+op Grocers (NCG), an organization that works to foster growth and efficiency within the cooperative grocery sector. Through this partnership, NCG will provide member stores with Mercato’s digital capabilities, including online ordering and delivery.
US: Kroger announces leadership changes
The Kroger Co. announced the retirement of Steve McKinney, senior vice president of retail divisions, after more than 40 years of distinguished service, effective August 7. McKinney will be succeeded by Valerie Jabbar, currently group vice president of center store merchandising.
US: Grocery Outlet to open first NJ store in Mercer County
A California-based discount supermarket chain is looking to expand in New Jersey and will be opening its first store in Mercer County. Grocery Outlet will open its new store in Hamilton Township at 1061 Whitehorse Mercerville Road, Jack Reilly, Grocery Outlet’s Director of Real Estate told Patch.
US: Walmart teams up with Symbotic to implement industry-leading supply chain automation system
Symbotic, a robotics and automation-based company focused on reimagining the traditional consumer goods supply chain and Walmart announced they will partner to reimagine the retailer’s regional distribution network. Symbotic first implemented its system in Walmart’s Brooksville, Florida distribution center in 2017. Since that time, the companies have worked together to optimize the system. Symbotic will begin the process of outfitting 25 additional regional distribution centers with the high-tech system aimed at furthering Walmart’s mission of operating a best-in-class supply chain.
US: Designing online grocery stores to support those striving to eat healthy for weight loss
With the rapid growth in online grocery shopping, researchers at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health (SPH) sought to identify design features online grocery stores should consider to support the increasing number of Americans striving to eat healthy for weight loss. Their findings were recently published in the journal Public Health Nutrition. The study is the first to use a customer-centric approach to generate ideas for features that may be included in online grocery shopping marketplaces to support healthy food choices for weight loss.
7-Eleven expands mobile checkout feature to thousands of US stores
7-Eleven, Inc. has expanded its new Mobile Checkout contactless shopping solution to an additional 2,500+ stores across the U.S. Using the 7-Eleven app, customers can quickly scan items and pay for purchases without ever standing in a checkout line. Mobile Checkout is now available in more than 3,000 participating 7-Eleven stores in 32 states including Washington, D.C.
US: FreshRealm closes $32mln capital raise
FreshRealm, a leading fresh meals solution provider, announced that it has raised $32mln in funding from accredited institutional investors. The company will utilize the capital to bolster its facilities, product and infrastructure to propel its rollout of national fresh meals destinations in retail grocery.
UK: Nisa highlights success of Deliveroo partnership
Nisa has revealed that its partner retailers using the Deliveroo app broke through the £100,000 sales barrier last week as better weather and the final stages of the Euro 2020 football championship saw shoppers step up their online purchasing. Currently there are more than 90 Nisa retailers using Deliveroo, one of Nisa’s delivered services partners, with more retailers signing up to the service every week.
Australia: ALDI signals change is on the horizon
Over the next 5 years, ALDI is embarking on a series of new initiatives that will see the business adopting smart and bespoke technology to expand the reach of its Good Different shopping experience. Both ALDI’s growing customer base and employees will have an improved experience, while also achieving the ambitious goals to reduce the company’s environmental footprint. ALDI recently celebrated its legacy of 20 years in Australia having contributed $30.2bln to the economy and saved Australians $2.4bln per year when they shop at ALDI compared to other major supermarkets. This year, ALDI implemented its first eCommerce trial in Australia. The business is now looking to expand the offering, after receiving positive feedback from the trial of a limited selection of Special Buys available for purchase online. Additionally, ALDI is undertaking a self-checkout trial in 10 NSW stores to provide customers with quicker ways to shop and drive business efficiencies. The expectation is that pending the results of the trial, the self-checkouts will be rolled out more widely. This week ALDI opened the first ‘Corner Store’ in North Sydney, a new small-format store layout, offering a range of ready-to-go meals and an artisan bakery.
Carrefour Spain offloads 38 stores from Supersol acquisition
Carrefour Spain has announced plans to sell 38 of the 172 stores it acquired from its recent takeover of Supersol, to a number of local and regional players. According to trade publication DARetail, Carrefour has signed agreements with Cash Lepe (Andalusia), Froiz (Galicia), Maskom (Malaga) and Ecomor (Madrid), over the future ownership of the stores. Cash Lepe is set to acquire 28 of the outlets, with the stores likely to be integrated into its El Jamón portfolio. Froiz is set to acquire 5 stores, Maskom will take over 4, and Ecomor will acquire a single sore in Madrid.
HelloFresh enters agreement to acquire Australian ready-to-eat meal manufacturer Youfoodz by way of a scheme of arrangement
HelloFresh SE (“HelloFresh”) announced that it has entered into a Scheme Implementation Deed under which it is proposed that HelloFresh or one of its directly or indirectly wholly owned Australian subsidiaries will acquire 100% of the share capital in Youfoodz Holdings Limited (“Youfoodz”) for A$0.93 per share in cash by way of a scheme of arrangement. Youfoodz is one of Australia’s leading ready-to-eat meal services, offering fresh and healthy chef-prepared meals as well as snacks and drinks through delivery (D2C) and retail (B2B).
Lidl GB pledges to increase sales of healthier food
Lidl GB has announced an ambitious new healthy food commitment, which will see the discounter increase sales of healthy and healthier products to at least 85% of total sales, based on tonnage volume, by 2025. This comes as the discounter has invested in its ‘Get Fresh’ initiative, which aims to increase the range of fresh healthy products, like fresh meat, fruit and vegetables available to customers in-store to offer even more healthy choices. Christian Härtnagel, CEO at Lidl GB, said: “At Lidl, we prove that eating healthy does not need to break the bank. Our competitive low prices across all our ranges, particularly fruit and vegetables, are marketing leading and ensure customers can access healthy food all year round”.
Australia: Woolworths proposes to build new fulfilment centre to service ecommerce sales growth
Woolworths has lodged development plans with the Sutherland Shire Council to build a new online customer fulfilment centre (CFC) in Caringbah, New South Wales to service the growth in online grocery orders. The supermarket giant envisions the new 7,200 square metre CFC as a space that can fulfil an extra 15,000 home deliveries and direct-to-boot pick-up windows each week for customers based in the Sutherland Shire, spanning from Kurnell to Engadine.
