Pre-prepared and pre-cooked products gain ground

Fresh products like melon, watermelon and pumpkin remain at the core of the agri-food company Vicente Peris, with a sales volume that reached 73% of its production in 2020. However, its pre-prepared and pre-cooked convenience food division has been gaining ground in terms of sales since its launch in 2014.

In 2020, pre-prepared and pre-cooked convenience products accounted for 27% of Vicente Peris’ sales, while in the first four months of 2021 this share has already reached 30%. The company’s forecast is to close the year with a 10% increase in sales compared to the same period of the previous year.

Vicente Peris markets more than 100 fresh-cut and pre-prepared convenience food products under the Peris and Frutifresh brands, with a range including products such as coconut, pomegranate and pineapple. Other fruits with significant sales are melon, watermelon and mango. In addition, they also supply the ‘Energy Mix’, which combines fresh and dried fruit, as well as a wide range of fruit-based preparations.

Peeled and chopped vegetables also account for a large share of its production volume in the pre-prepared convenience food range, with onions standing out in terms of sales percentage.

“Our main objective is to grow while maintaining the quality that the Peris brand is known for, even though we know that this is always a longer road. With the pre-prepared convenience food range we wanted to maintain the same standards as with the fresh range, selecting the best pieces at their optimum moment of ripeness. Our customers understand and appreciate this,” says Alberto Montaña, manager of Vicente Peris.

In 2021, more sustainable packaging and new products
Throughout 2021, the prospect is to see developments in the packaging in which processed products are supplied. At present, 70% of the plastic in each tub is already recycled; the maximum currently possible without jeopardizing food safety or the proper preservation of the product. In addition, it is PET, the most sustainable of plastics, as it is 100% recyclable; however, Vicente Peris is always looking for new, more sustainable materials, and very soon they will present innovations in this line.
